Easy Sweet Mustard Hot Ham & Cheese

Sometimes you stumble upon one of those great go-to recipes–the kind you turn to time and time again when you’re in need of a delicious supper in a pinch.

These sandwiches have become exactly that for me!  A friend shared the recipe a few months ago and it’s so easy and so good I find myself pulling it out all the time, particularly on busy nights or weekends when I either don’t have the time or can’t find the energy to put together a big, involved meal.  With a bowl of soup or just some chips on the side, these sandwiches are perfect!Basic Ingredients:

  • Bakery loaf or rolls of your choice — Use whatever bread you prefer!  I’ve tried several different breads and they’re all good–onion rolls, French bread, sweet Hawaiian rolls.  I’m sure sourdough or focaccia would be great, too.  Our local Kroger bakery sells a Sweet Italian loaf we LOVE and that’s what I usually use.
  • lunchmeats — I called this a hot ham and cheese, but use whatever meats you like, as much or a little as you like.
  • vegetables — Lettuce, onions, tomato, pickles, olives, banana peppers.  Or none at all!  Vegetables can be added after you bake the sandwiches or before, but if you choose to add them before baking, keep in mind you may also need to add to your bake time, just to make sure your sandwich is heated through and your cheese melted.
  • cheese slices — American, Pepper Jack, Swiss, or cheddar are all good, but smoked provolone is fabulous!

Sweet Mustard Dressing:

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 T. mustard
  • 1 T. dehydrated minced onion
  • 2 T. sugar

Directions:

Mix the dressing ingredients with a whisk until the sugar is dissolved.  Slice open rolls or bread if necessary. Layer lunchmeats, veggies, and cheese, then drizzle with the mustard mixture or spread over the bread like any other condiment.  Bake the sandwiches for 10-12 minutes at 300 degrees.

Voila!  These sandwiches get along great with chips or fries, but pair them with a big pot of potato soup and you have some amazing autumn deliciousness!

By the way…I can usually make the dressing last for two meals.  Whatever I don’t use the first time around I freeze in a plastic container and the next time I’m ready for a hot ham and cheese, it’s ready to go!

So save yourself some stress tonight and just do sandwiches.  Believe me, you won’t regret it!
