If you know me very well at all, then you know how much I love American history; the Revolutionary War period in particular. It’s an incredible true story filled with action and adventure, and it involved so many fascinating personalities.
Like the Marquis de Lafayette of France.
Ever heard of him? If you haven’t, you probably aren’t alone. But Lafayette was such an intriguing character: A 19-year old French noble who came to America to join the fight for independence, even against the direct orders of his king. In spite of his youth and his lack of combat experience, Lafayette quickly proved himself a strong and capable leader in battle, and his efforts both on and off the battlefield were instrumental in American victory.
But what fascinates me most about Lafayette is his relationship with George Washington, who took the young Lafayette under his wing and came to view him as an adopted son.
That is what this book, Revolutionary Friends, is all about.
Author Selene Castrovilla shares with children the true story of the father/son relationship that developed between General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette during the years of the Revolutionary War, a relationship that would continue for the rest of their lives. It is personal stories like these that really bring historical figures to life, and this beautifully illustrated book gives young readers an amazing glimpse into the humanity of two of the American Revolution’s greatest heroes.
While the book is targeted to kids age 8 to 12, younger children will love the colorful pictures, and older kids, (and adults like me!) can draw from a beautiful retelling of a true story and an interesting timeline of events in the back of the book.
No question — This is one of my favorite kids’ books. And especially for study of the American Revolution, Revolutionary Friends is a must for your reading list!
