I’m all for fun books.
But fun books that also teach my kids something… THOSE are my favorites!
My kids have loved this book for a long time. Somewhere in our whole moving process it was buried and forgotten for a while, but it’s being put to use again in our home and homeschool, and I’m being reminded what a wonderful little teaching tool it is!
The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller
If you are wanting your children to learn the U. S. states, but the fact that there are FIFTY of them has you feeling a little overwhelmed, I really can’t recommend this book highly enough! In our house we’ve been working on labeling all the U. S. states. Two of my children have mastered this, but the other two still have some work to do. The Scrambled States of America is proving to be a big help in that department. My oldest daughter insists this book is the reason she can label a map correctly!
In The Scrambled States of America, all the states get together for a party and then decide to switch places, only to realize in the end how much happier they were in their original spots. Listen, memorizing a U. S. map is pretty dull, but turn all those states into colorful characters with voices and personalities, and suddenly the learning begins to happen by accident!
Apparently there is a The Scrambled States of America Game out as well, which I have no doubt would be equally fun and educational. Anything that can help with a little U. S. geography is a plus, right?
The book itself is intended for kids age 8 and up, but I wouldn’t consider it too advanced for younger children. Laurie Keller created a fun and funny way to help kids learn their states. If you get your children reading The Scrambled States of America, don’t be surprised to see them doing a little “accidental” learning!

This is a fun book. I purchased it for my nephews a while back.

It’s very fun! And of course I love books that kids don’t even recognize as learning tools! 🙂
