Overall, I’m a creature of habit. I like routine, and once I’m comfortable with a particular system, it’s hard for me to break away from it.
But especially where homeschooling is concerned, I have learned that changing things up from time to time is one of the best things I can do for my homeschool.
Sometimes you need a new approach!
Just because something worked with child #1 doesn’t mean it is ideal for #2. Often a curriculum switch or a change in method can make all the difference in a child’s response and learning.
Sometimes you need a different schedule!
Families go through seasons, and in some seasons one homeschooling schedule may have to be retired and a new one put into place.
Sometimes you need a new attitude!
Moms, we’re kidding ourselves if we can’t accept that sometimes the greatest issue in our homeschool is our own outlook. A little attitude refreshing can change EVERYTHING!
The truth is…
Inflexibility in homeschooling breeds discontent.
Want a miserable homeschool? Refuse to change things. Ever.
We all have the approach we’re most familiar with, the schedule we prefer, and the curricula we like, but if we aren’t willing to tweak those things occasionally for the good of our children and ourselves, we are almost certainly doomed to homeschooling failure.
Even the simplest of changes can encourage kids who may be less-than-stellar students.
Let’s face it: Not all kids are natural scholars, and often our pushing and prodding does more to make kids hate school than to motivate learning. Sometimes a change in curriculum, an alteration of assignments, or a change in the schedule can relieve some pressure, drive interest, and help kids find a love for learning again.
Something new can reenergize the burned-out homeschooling mom.
Hey, this homeschooling thing is tough! And often we make our job harder for ourselves by being so rigidly devoted to things that aren’t working, just because they are familiar or because they have been effective in the past. Though trying new things can be scary sometimes, the potential benefits make it well worth the risk!
It’s back-to-homeschool season and I highly recommend tackling the new school year with a willingness to try something new! You never know how it may pay off in peace of mind and an all-around happier homeschool!
