Given the recent police shootings and a growing awareness of the kind of danger our law enforcement officers face each day, more and more people are taking the time to express their gratitude to the men and women in blue.
Which is a great thing, though it’s certainly a shame it takes such tragedy to put it into our minds.
Sometimes showing our appreciation can be as simple as saying thank you or handing a cop a bottle of water on a hot day or a cup of coffee on a rainy one. But perhaps you’ve been thinking of doing a little something more. If you’re able to show appreciation to all the officers at your local department, then by all means do so! If not, find a way to be a blessing to a police officer who lives in your neighborhood, patrols your street, or who you sometimes see at the corner convenience store.
If you need some ideas, here are 5 great ways to say thanks. Four of them offer free printables to complete your gift.
These Police Thank You Cards from Teachers Pay Teachers get the kids involved in saying thank you. They are a perfect expression of gratitude all by themselves, but would be awesome paired with one of the simple gifts following.
The “You’re a Lifesaver” Bags from Long Wait for Isabella give simple, but thoughtful expressions of thanks to an officer. I also love the scripture on the back of these printable cards, because they speak so well to what our officers do on a daily basis. “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless, maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute, rescue the weak and the needy…” Psalm 82:3-4
The Police Officer Appreciation Bags from Smashed Peas and Carrots are a fun way to say thanks to law enforcement. Who doesn’t want those candies to begin with, but the note explaining each candy’s meaning adds a special touch.
For a more practical gift for a police officer, check out these Appreciation Gift Baggies from I Save A to Z. They include sensible gifts like hand sanitizer, tissues, and lip balm, plus an energy shot, which can probably come in handy from time to time!
While this Donut Police Appreciation Gift from Salt and Pepper Moms was actually designed with teachers in mind, it just fits police officers too well for me not to include it! Yes, the whole doughnut and police officers thing is very stereotypical, but then again I don’t know many people who can’t appreciate a good doughnut, no matter what they’re occupation! Anyway, attach these printable labels to jars filled with mini donuts or to a giant box of donuts from your local doughnut shop. Trust me, I don’t think the stereotype will be too offensive for them to enjoy your gift! 😉
Listen, saying thank you matters. We all want to be appreciated, but these men and women put their lives on the line for us daily. The least we can do is take a little time and make a little effort to show them our gratitude.
Thanks so much to all the men and women in blue!
