Last month I shared with you one of my favorite kids’ books. Revolutionary Friends is the true story of the father/son relationship between George Washington and the young Marquis de Lafayette of France.
Adopted Son by David A. Clary is the same fascinating narrative, but for adults! It tells the true story of a young French nobleman who at age 19 came to join in America’s fight for independence. Fatherless, inexperienced, and anxious to prove himself, Lafayette was immediately awestruck by the General George Washington. Washington in turn took the young man under his wing, guided and advanced him, and bonded with him in such a way their mutual respect and admiration as a father and son would last the rest of their lives.
Personally, I love historical human interest stories! Nothing brings interesting figures from history to life for me like the stories that touch on their humanity — their personal losses and successes, and their relationships. Clary delves into countless personal letters and historical documents to tell his story, and it reads far more like a novel than a history book.
Adopted Son gives a beautiful glimpse into the nature of the father of our country, and provides an interesting look at an often forgotten young French noble who truly became an American hero.
