When I Love Being a Mom

Let’s be honest.  There are many aspects of motherhood that are hardly delightful:  Childbirth.  Potty training.  Laundry.  Fevers.  Spills.  Stomach viruses.  Sibling fights.  Croup.  Bike wrecks.  Stitches.

But then there are the other times, the times when I find myself so in love with my job as mom that something inside me swells until it threatens to burst my heart with all the feelings it just can’t contain.Sometimes I go in at night and pull the covers up around a child’s chin, only to have them throw them off again so they can grip my neck in a sweet embrace and plant a kiss on my cheek.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes my child tells me I make the best cookies in all the world and the chocolate smeared across their lips and cheek almost makes me believe it.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes a little boy proudly presents me with a fistful of dandelions and what I see as a nuisance determined to destroy my pretty lawn, he sees as a thoughtful gift for the woman he loves most, (for now.)

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes I bandage a cut and little eyes look up at me with such wonder and respect, as if I am the greatest healer in all the world.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes I listen to a rambling story of friends and fun mixed with awkward moments and strange new feelings and when it’s finished I sense a bond with a “tween” who just wanted someone to listen.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes little lips with childlike faith ask me to pray and seem so certain of an answer that my own faith is bolstered.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes I watch a child learn, see the brightness that fills their face when they finally grasp something they’ve never been able to grasp before.

And I love being a mom.

Sometimes a little hand slips in mine and I’m reminded how fleeting are these days with children in my home.  Before I know it, they’ll be gone.  Already my kids are growing so much, changing so quickly.  I want to cherish each moment, enjoy each day to the best of my ability, in spite of all those less-than-delightful aspects of motherhood.

The day to day, the tedious and mundane experiences of life tend to dull our senses and our gratitude, but I never want to become so overwhelmed with the everyday, that I’m unable to shake myself and remember…

I love being a mom.

To all you wonderful moms:
Happy Mother’s Day
